Spending time with our guests from Fullers Quality Bakers in Goole, Hughes Family Bakers in Shipley, Melvyn Davis Bakers and Confectioners in Bingley and Staniforths in Rawmarsh proved to be a fantastic opportunity, not only to see the whites on form but also to get to know everyone on a social level. WE LOOK AT HOW OPERATORS CAN TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE PROFITABLE PLANT POUND.IT IS NOW MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO HAVE A TASTY RANGE OF MEAT-FREE DISHES ON YOUR MENU• It is hard to read about any food category these days without mentioning meat-free eating and even harder to ignore the profitable plant pound. The power of the internet continues to inform consumers of the health and environmental benefits of following a plant-based diet, and as a result there are now more vegans, vegetarians and flexitarians in the UK than ever before.• It will come as no surprise that the majority of such diners fall into either the Gen Y or Gen Z categories. Veganism is growing generally but especially among younger consumers.MIMICKING MEAT - SOME 15% OF CONSUMERS AGREE THAT MEAT-FREE BURGERS THAT ‘BLEED’ ARE APPEALING• Even if they do not strictly fall under the vegan or vegetarian label, it is clear that meat-free is becoming more relevant to consumers, with more than half of those in the UK reducing their meat consumption.• With scrambled tofu, seitan ‘chicken’ wings and ‘pulled pork’ jackfruit tacos appearing across menus, it would appear that non-meat eaters would still like for their substitutions to look, taste and feel like the real thing.TASTING LIKE MEAT IS THE TOP ENTICING FACTOR FOR 26% OF NON / INFREQUENT EATERS OF VEGETARIAN / MEAT-FREE FOODS• The market will continue to grow beyond just meat alternatives, as more varieties of thing like vegan cheese, brioche buns and ice cream are developed to ensure people do not miss out on their favourites.• Consumers are now becoming more familiar with the available options in the market and manufacturers are becoming more savvy with their offerings to capitalise on the trend. Diners, whether vegan or not, will opt for these because of their health benefits and flavourful appeal.59% OF MEAT-FREE ALTERNATIVES ARE EATEN BY NON-VEGETARIANS• Just looking at the figures from the past year alone, it is clear that the meat-free category’s growth is likely to continue for many years to come. For instance, the Veganuary campaign, where people eat vegan for the month of January – grew by 183% in 2018, as participants notice the benefits of feeling healthier, so continue to maintain this lifestyle for the remainder of the year.• Whether expanding their range, hosting one-off events or having dedicated concepts, businesses both big and small are capitalising on the plant based revolution!Next >
